It would be a shame to head off along the parkway without spending some time in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Straddling the North Carolina-Tennessee border, almost this entire 2, sq km square mile park is covered in dense forest, attracting wildlife such as black bears, groundhogs, chipmunks and white-tailed deer.
The song of over bird species fills the air, while streams teem with fish and salamanders. Despite being one of the most-visited national parks, it still felt like a remote wilderness as I splashed my way through trickling streams and listened to the roar of waterfalls spilling over the rocks.
As well as hiking, you could follow cycle trails, try rock climbing or spend an afternoon fishing. Asheville had a markedly different feel to the other cities I visited.
The Appalachian Mountains form the backdrop, while the downtown area is filled with bars, low-key bookshops and s Art Deco buildings. Artists often give live demonstrations of their art, and you can enjoy lunch in one of the restaurants that have popped up in the area.
Nearby is the Wedge Brewing Company, where you can sample locally made craft beers. A guided or self-guided tour of the house reveals the history behind the mansion and its former owners. The town is also known for hosting the Bluff Mountain Festival now celebrating its 27th year , which features old-time and bluegrass music , clogging, square dancing, and more! Home to a laid-back downtown filled with arts and crafts galleries, bookstores, restaurants , and more, Bryson City NC boasts undeniable small-town charm.
The Tuckasegee River runs right through town and is great for kayaking, paddle boarding, or fishing. Those who prefer to stay on dry land can explore various hiking trails that lead to beautiful overlooks, waterfalls, and streams.
A popular outdoor adventure destination, the Deep Creek Recreation Area is located just 5 minutes from downtown and is a great place for river tubing or just splashing around in the stream.

There are many things to do in Little Switzerland, from driving the curvy route known as the Diamondback and panning for gems at Emerald Village to shopping, restaurants, and visiting the apple orchards at the Orchard at Altapass. There are some great cabins in Cherokee NC for rent as well. We fell in love with the natural beauty of the Haywood County area, which includes two lakes Junaluska and Logan , the Shining Rock Wilderness, several waterfalls, and some of the tallest mountains east of the Mississippi River.
